[004] Amy Goldring & Jonathan Powell

You hear your own heartbeat when you hold your breath
16th August - 15th September 2019
Launch Evening 16th August 6-9pm

This exhibition brings together two painters who take their inspiration from prehistoric cave art where both artists use painting as a personally specific ritualistic event. The title comes from the Werner Herzog film 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' describing human presence in a 'single place' over many generations and thousands of years, recording the passing of time on an epic scale.

Jonathan Powell's process is akin to archaeology where the painting goes through months of repeated painting and scraping back, each time revealing an unexplored world of faint shadows & ghostly lines. A place he likes to call 'in-between painting' where voids and shapes slip between colours and out of reach narratives igniting new frictions and adding fuel to new quarrels that then point the way for the next applications of paint. This building and destruction of the painting during its creation is a very important part of the artists' process. For this exhibition Powell's paintings have developed into primordial landscapes which are titled 'The Birth of Concrete, there is fire over there'.

Amy Goldring's work also consists of an iterative process - the original form of the work, derived from figure paintings, is repeatedly overlaid in a searching progression that relates to a pursuit of visual truth. The embodied experience of making a painting informs an intense working method in the studio that matches up the emotions of working with paint with the need to synthesise a visual language on the canvases.

Jonathan Powell is a Swansea based artist and has been director and curator of elysium gallery since 2007 and the founder and continues to run the Beep Painting Prize Biennial since 2012. Amy Goldring is also based in Swansea and is a member of Elysium Studios.
